On January 1, 2019, a vacancy on the Governing Board of the San José Unified School District occurred when Pamela Foley commenced her term of office as a member of the San Jose City Council.

Consistent with all applicable laws and policies, the Board of Education has completed the public announcement and appointment process. That process concluded with the provisional appointment of Carla Collins at a special meeting of the Board of Education on Tuesday, January 15, 2019. Carla Collins took the oath of office and was afforded all the powers and duties of the Governing Board member representing Trustee Area 3 at the regular meeting of the Board of Education on Thursday, January 17, 2019.

The provisional appointment of Carla Collins as the Governing Board member representing Trustee Area 3 shall become effective unless a petition calling for a special election pursuant to California Education Code 5091 is filed in the Office of the Santa Clara County Superintendent of Schools within 30 days of this provisional appointment, which is February 14, 2019.
